Bella has been practicing massage since 1999. She originally trained at the Oxford School of Massage where she achieved an ITEC and Holistic Massage Diploma. Since then she has developed her training and attended post diploma courses, mainly at Jing Advanced Massage in Brighton, which have brought her the tools and inspiration to treat pain and injury as well as give a deeply nurturing massage. Through her personal practice of mindful meditation and gentle yoga, Bella has developed a sensitivity to the body and how massage has a profound effect on all levels.

Swedish Holistic and Deep Tissue Massage

Using Trigger points, combined with stretching and Eastern techniques, massage can help with:
- carpal tunnel
- lower back pain
- neck and shoulder tension
- frozen shoulder
- period pains
- rehabilitation after an injury
and much more...

Hot Stone Massage
Basalt, a black volcanic stone is heated in hot water and thus applied in a treatment. The stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage, the heat relaxes the muscles and increases the blood flow to the area being worked on which further accelerates the healing process. The warmth also allows a soul nourishing relaxation bringing the client to a deep sense of peace.

Pregnancy Massage
Massage therapy can be a wonderful experience from the early weeks of pregnancy through to birth. In the first trimester massage can help restore the body during this time of enormous changes. Through nurture and relaxation a mother can learn to feel more at home in her changing body. Using reflexology as well as massage, tiredness is eased, nausea can be alleviated and better sleep can be encouraged.

During the second trimester a mother can start to feel more aches and pains, particularly in her lower back, pelvis, hips and upper back. This can be eased through movement, gentle stretches, reflexology and massage, helping a mother to be more comfortable as well as leaving her with a feeling of calm. A mother can be advised on how to move and rest in positions which encourage a natural alignment of the spine and pelvis, in order to keep her happy in her body.

In the third trimester the body is getting ready for birth. During this time, particular attention is paid to the pelvis, keeping it's muscles supple and balanced. A mother may also be experiencing mid-back, neck and shoulder discomfort and a general feeling of tired muscles, which can be eased through massage. There may also start to be swelling in the hands, feet and legs - lymphatic massage can help move stagnant fluid.

Specific exercises can be shown which encourage a baby to be in an optimal foetal position for birth which can lead to a much more gentle experience, particularly for first-time mothers or those who have had a history of long and difficult deliveries.

At this stage the mother's birth partner can be involved. Through partner-work, massage during labour for pain relief is shared as well as relaxation exercises for those moments between contractions. Breath-work and movement can also be helpful for both the mother and birth partner. It is encouraged that everything that is shared during these sessions is practiced as much as possible in the lead up to birth. This is because the techniques are relieving and can alleviate late pregnancy discomfort as well as stay fresh in the mind for when they are most needed.

As both a Massage Therapist and Doula, Bella Aris is particularly interested in spending time with a pregnant mother for both the physical preparations as well as the emotional ones. For labour to go smoothly, a woman needs to feel safe and protected as well as unobserved. Any fears she may have need to be addressed but overall she needs to feel empowered. This encourages oxytocin, a hormone needed for uterine contractions. This hormone is also known as the happy hormone and in order for it to thrive, touch and reassurance can be helpful. Although no one can predict how a birth will go, certain criteria can be encouraged in order to set the scene for a positive and nurturing experience.
